The Okefenokee area is located in the heart of Southeast Georgia and is the gateway to the world famous Okefenokee Swamp. Waycross, which is the economic hub of the area, received its name from its strategic position: where “ways cross”.

It is easy to see why our community is an excellent location for any business.

Waycross, which is the economic hub of the Okefenokee Area, received its name from its strategic position: where “ways cross”. In colonial days, it was the hub of stage coach roads and pioneer trails. Later, the old Plant System and the Brunswick and Western Railroad lines crossed here, giving birth to our modern rail and highway network.

Waycross is strategically located for service to the Southeastern United States. Waycross is located on the South Georgia Parkway (US 82), a four lane highway which connects directly to two interstate highways, I-75 to the west and I-95 to the east, each approximately one hour away.

U.S 1 provides a third four-lane interstate connection to I-10 and I-95 in Jacksonville. As part of the Governor’s Road Improvement Program (GRIP), three additional four-lane highways leading out of Waycross are under development.

Rail System

CSX Transportation’s largest and most productive automated classification facility is located in Waycross, Georgia. Waycross’s importance to the system traffic pattern and geographic location combine to establish it as an ideal facility site. Six separate CSX lines radiate from Waycross, resulting in direct access to all areas of the Southeastern United States. Approximately 65 trains per day are handled in the Waycross facility. Direct daily trains connect Waycross to such major metropolitan areas as Atlanta, Jacksonville, News Orleans, Chicago, Miami, Tampa, Nashville, Cincinnati, Richmond, Charleston, Louisville, and Birmingham. Communities south of Atlanta have a one to two day delay in shipments as compared to delivery to and from Waycross. CSX is one of the nation’s largest and oldest railroads with links to 20 states and Canada. No other rail system in the South is better suited to meet all your transportation needs than CSX.

Ware and Pierce Counties are approximately one hour from the Jacksonville International Airport, which has over 200 jet departures daily. In 2007 more than 6.3 million passengers used Jacksonville International Airport. The Jacksonville International Airport is served by more than a dozen major carriers and a network of regional carriers. The Jacksonville International Airport has a full service terminal building and outstanding ground transportation. It is a medium HUB and encompasses 8000 acres. The airport is close in proximity to I-95, I-295 and US1. The Waycross Ware County Airport, situated on 1040 acres, has three runways, one of which is 6,000 feet in length and is located adjacent to our Industrial Park. Recent improvements have included an ILS (Instrument Landing System) installation, a total upgrade of approach lighting, and a beautiful airport terminal building. The Waycross-Ware County Airport ranks among the best in mid-size airports and is one of the best equipped to accomodate most any corporate and transit traffic, incoming and outgoing.

innerportDeep Water Ports

Waycross is ideally located near four deep water ocean ports. Georgia’s deep water ports in Savannah and Brunswick continue to grow in importance as major transportation hubs for the movement of international commerce. Location weighs heavily as a contributing factor of sustained growth in businesses that access Georgia’s ports. The Brunswick, Georgia port is less than one hour away, and the Savannah, Georgia port is less than two hours away.

The Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach, Florida ports are just over an hour away.

Each of these ports is accessible by four-lane highways from all our parks. Direct rail line access is also available from all our industrial parks. The Okefenokee Area’s location makes shipping by water an easy and affordable alternative for any business.
